Police Officer Recruiting:
New York State schedules the exam for entry-level police officers in mid-September each year. In years in which Oneonta opts to participate in the exam, the official exam announcement will be released in June and the last day to apply will be in early August.
To apply for the next police exam, candidates must submit an application along with all items indicated on the last page of the exam announcement after the official exam announcement is released and before the deadline which will be stated in the announcement.
To be eligible for appointment, a candidate must be reachable on the eligible list established as a result of the written exam and must successfully pass the subsequent physical agility test.
Police Officer - Fitness Requirements
Please note that the Oneonta Civil Service Commission does not allow retests if a candidate fails the physical agility test and does not accept results from physical agility tests hosted by other civil service agencies. Candidates must take the test administered by this agency and must pass on the first attempt.
The date of the physical agility test will be announced around the time of the written test. The alternate test date policy, as stated on the exam announcement for the written test, applies to both the written exam and physical agility test.
A candidate who is reachable on the list and passes the agility test will be eligible for an interview. After the interview process, select candidates will receive a conditional job offer. Those candidates then must satisfactorily pass background, psychological, medical, and drug screenings before being officially appointed.

If you are currently employed as a New York State certified full-time police officer with a permanent civil service classification, and you are interested in employment with the Oneonta Police Department, you may be eligible to be hired as a lateral transfer. To be eligible you must:
- Have a clean service record
- Have been hired competitively from a civil service eligible list
- Have successfully completed the Municipal Police Training Council Basic Academy
- Successfully completed the civil service probationary term with your current employer
New York State Civil Service law does not permit transfers from the NYS Troopers or NY Police Department to local police agencies. Candidates from these agencies may seek employment with OPD via the competitive testing process described above.
