OTHER CITY RECREATION PROGRAMS

Winter Ice Skating:  Ice skating on Hodges Pond is a long-standing tradition in Oneonta, with an official program dating back to 1955.  Although mild winters have hampered efforts in recent years, the City of Oneonta remains committed to offering year round recreation opportunities for its residents.  To supplement skating days on Hodges Pond a dryland rink is constructed annually adjacent to the Neahwa Park Tennis Courts.  The dryland rink freezes faster than the pond and has extended the ice skating season by weeks in recent years.  Call 432.7997 for daily updates regarding hours and conditions.

Community Gardens:  With 24 plots located in Swart-Wilcox Historic Park, the Community Gardens program offers residents a chance to grow their own vegetables, herbs or flowers.  Plots are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis with preference given to gardeners in good standing from the previous season.  Applications are accepted beginning the first Friday of March for city residents and three weeks later for non-city residents (pending availability).

Summer Tennis Tourney Series:  The City Recreation Department hosts three annual tennis tournaments each season.  The events are held each year during the months of July and August at Wilber Park's Waddington Tennis Courts.  Tournaments are FREE to all participants with sponsors presenting trophies to winners.  The first tournament each year is a round robin doubles format with men's, women's, and mixed divisions.  The other tournaments are single elimination with singles brackets for men and women as well as men's, women's and mixed doubles brackets.

In addition to the programs offered by the Recreation Department, the parks are bustling throughout the year with recreational offerings from other city agencies and a number of private organizations.  These include prominent events such as the Hometown Fourth of July Celebration, the Pit Run Road Race, and the Summer Concert Series.  Other common offerings include; adult basketball, softball, and soccer leagues, road races, charitable walks, parades, concerts, bicycle rallies, youth clinics, dog obedience classes, public health rabies clinics or maybe something new exciting that YOU want to organize.  Come to a Parks and Recreation meeting and pitch us your idea for a fun, community event.

The Recreation Office can direct you to information on all these wonderful events.
