The City of Oneonta Fire Department has a career staff and a paid part-time/call staff.  Our immediate district radius is approximately fourteen miles.  Medical transport contracts with several neighboring districts increase our coverage area to approximately thirty miles.  In addition to emergency fire and ambulance responses, our members are involved with many teaching aspects in both the fire and medical fields.  Our department also has technical response teams for our own use and for assistance to other departments when requested.

Over the last several years, the number of department responses has increased dramatically.  This is especially true for medical assistance calls which comprise approximately 80 percent of our calls.  It is also true for motor vehicle collisions.  Fire responses are generally for alarms at local businesses and to the two colleges within our district.

In part due to our fire prevention training and programs for the community, we have only responded to an average of twelve major structure fires per year in our district.  We are dispatched for mutual aid structure fires, grass fires, and FAST responses.
